Order an ESX file when you estimate in Xactimate, and an XML file when you estimate in Symbility. Both contain the same underlying roof measurements (facet areas, pitch, ridge, hip, valley, rake, and eave lengths), but they are packaged so that each estimating platform can read the data automatically instead of forcing you to key it in by hand.

What is an ESX file?

ESX is the native sketch format for Xactimate. When you import an ESX roof report, Xactimate rebuilds the roof diagram inside your estimate: every facet, slope, and line segment appears on the sketch, and the measured quantities flow straight into your line items. There is no re-drawing and no manual measurement entry, which is where most estimating errors and wasted time come from.

What is an XML file?

XML is the interchange format Symbility uses to import roof geometry. An XML roof report carries the same measurements as the ESX version, but structured for Symbility's sketch engine. If your carrier or TPA runs claims through Symbility, XML is the format you want.

Do you ever need both?

Sometimes. If you estimate in Xactimate but a reviewer or carrier works in Symbility, ordering both ESX and XML avoids a re-order later. Many teams also add a PDF report so a human-readable diagram is available for the file, the homeowner, or the field crew who do not have estimating software open.

What about wall reports?

Roof formats cover the roof only. If your claim involves siding, wraps, or elevation measurements, add a wall report so you capture wall areas and openings in the same order instead of measuring them separately.
