How to Import an ESX Roof Report into Xactimate

To import an ESX roof report into Xactimate, open your estimate, go to the Sketch tab, choose Import Sketch, and select the ESX file. Xactimate rebuilds the roof diagram and pulls the measured quantities into your estimate automatically, with no manual measuring required.

Before you start

  • Have the ESX file saved somewhere you can find it (download it from your RoofAngle account).
  • Create or open the Xactimate estimate for the property.
  • Confirm the address on the report matches the loss location.

Step-by-step

  1. Open the estimate in Xactimate (desktop or online).
  2. Go to the Sketch tab. This is where the roof diagram lives.
  3. Choose Import Sketch (sometimes labeled Import) from the sketch tools.
  4. Select the ESX file you downloaded and confirm.
  5. Review the diagram. Xactimate places every facet, slope, ridge, hip, and valley on the sketch.
  6. Check the roof groups and quantities flowing into your line items, then continue building the estimate as usual.

Common questions

Will the measurements populate automatically?

Yes. That is the point of ESX: areas, pitch, and edge lengths (ridge, hip, valley, rake, eave) come in with the sketch, so you are not re-typing numbers.

The import looks off, what now?

First confirm you imported the correct file for the correct address. If a facet or pitch looks wrong, RoofAngle reports are human-reviewed and include free revisions, so request a correction rather than editing around it.

What if I use Symbility instead of Xactimate?

Order the XML version instead of ESX, and it imports into Symbility the same way. See ESX vs XML roof reports for which to choose.
